The lifespan of a forklift is influenced by many factors, but before we learn about them, it’s important to understand how the age of a given forklift is measured. It is determined in kilometers traveled or in hours. If we were to look at single-shift work that lasts 8 hours, we should expect that such equipment will work for 2000 hours per year. The average lifespan of a forklift is 10,000 hours. It should also be noted that it often happens that a forklift will last over 20,000 hours. However, this applies to the highest quality equipment.
Forklift Resource – What Is It?
Resource is the predicted lifespan of a forklift, which is calculated based on various component factors. Thanks to it, we will be able to predict how long a given device will serve us, as well as when we will need to take care of its service.
Calculating the resource for forklifts has been required since October 30, 2018, when an amendment to the regulation of the Minister of Technology and Entrepreneurship came into force, concerning technical conditions of technical supervision regarding modernization, repairs and operation of UTB equipment.
Forklift resource is calculated through calculations made during so-called special inspections, based on the history of operation and maintenance, as well as the current technical condition of the given equipment.
How Can You Increase Forklift Lifespan?
Forklift lifespan can be increased through:
- maintenance – just like cars, forklifts that undergo regular service last significantly longer than forklifts that are not serviced
- optimal conditions – forklifts located in cool and clean environments last significantly longer. Very low temperatures contribute to rapid aging of forklifts,
- appropriate application – used forklifts on multiple shifts during the day age much faster than those that operate only on one shift.
What Factors Can Contribute to Faster Forklift Wear?
Forklifts, just like all other vehicles, can be subject to deterioration due to various factors, among which we should definitely mention:
- improper maintenance,
- use during several shifts per day,
- too low temperatures.
If we want to actually contribute to the longevity of a forklift, we must absolutely avoid the above-mentioned factors. Their impact on the technical condition of UDT equipment is negative. In this way, we can quickly lose previously invested funds in equipment for a store or warehouse. We can maintain the longevity of our forklift only by following the actions mentioned in the earlier part of this article. Let’s keep in mind important principles so that the forklift is always fully ready for work. Thanks to such behavior in the long term, we will also be able to save our money.
