Every vehicle or machine that is intensively operated wears out. Therefore, you cannot expect that old forklifts will be in as excellent condition as their newest counterparts. Well, if we take care of our equipment, regularly repair faults and replace service elements, then even a twenty-year-old specimen can still be in excellent condition. However, if old forklifts are left to themselves, and the owner only wants to use them until the first serious breakdown occurs, then problems will definitely start to pile up quickly. First of all, unrepaired faults lead to improper functioning of various systems and components, which consequently leads to the occurrence of further damage (which could be avoided altogether). At some point, we face the need to invest such a large sum of money that further operation of the machine becomes unprofitable.
What to take care of in old forklifts?
The most important system of combustion forklifts is hydraulics, engine and power transmission to the drive wheels. Therefore, you should regularly check the hydraulic oil level, eliminate all leaks, replace valves that refuse to obey. Oil must also be changed every specified number of engine hours determined by the manufacturer. Old forklifts usually had engines of very simple construction, so if we take care of regular oil and filter changes, they will certainly serve for many years.

You also cannot forget about the drive system, which is usually also powered by hydraulics. In the case of electric forklifts, which came into common use somewhat later, batteries are most important. They should be replaced in specific configurations (in pairs or all at once), not allowed to discharge excessively, and also ensure good condition of all connections (removing rust). Electric motors serving the drive and lift are usually maintenance-free and very durable.
As you can see, old forklifts can be successfully operated further, taking care of regular service. Thanks to this, they will not suffer serious breakdowns or generate large one-time costs. Regular replacement of operating fluids, filters and control of the most important systems is enough for these machines to serve for many years.
