Autonomous forklifts are a very good solution that will work well in automating internal goods transport. Such forklifts are self-propelled vehicles that move along designated routes. Such devices do not require operator supervision. Thanks to them, goods flow can be significantly improved. They are much more useful than the manual handling equipment used so far. If you are wondering how to improve internal transport in your company – this article is for you.

What are autonomous forklifts?

Autonomous forklifts are devices that can transport loads without operator intervention. This can take place between two points in one warehouse or between two different facilities. The use of this type of forklifts enjoys great interest, because thanks to them, on designated routes, it is possible to significantly facilitate the transport of even very heavy loads.

Importantly, using autonomous forklifts is a solution that is not only functional, but also safe. Additionally, it is a good way to shorten goods transport, which in the long term can bring considerable savings.

Due to the fact that autonomous forklifts do not need operators, their use can also be useful in case of serious staff shortages.

What guidance systems are used in autonomous forklifts?

Autonomous forklifts are equipped with various guidance systems:

  • electromagnetic systems – in this case, forklifts move along paths designated by wires placed under the warehouse floor. Such a solution can only be used for fixed travel routes;
  • image recognition – in this case, the forklift’s operation is based on artificial intelligence algorithms. The image of the environment through which the forklift will move comes from panoramic cameras;
  • optical – forklifts move along a special reflective tape that marks the travel route;
  • laser – such a system uses laser scanners to determine the device’s position in the warehouse.

For forklifts to operate efficiently and safely, it is necessary to upload the current map of the facility to the device’s memory. Autonomous forklifts can also be controlled through 2D-3D mapping. In this case, the devices will move around the facility using a virtual map. This will be created based on information from cameras and sensors.

How do autonomous forklifts work?

Autonomous forklifts can move freely and safely around the warehouse surface thanks to the synchronization of guidance systems and appropriate software. In this case, warehouse control systems (WCS) or warehouse management systems (WMS) are very often used.

Forklifts are fully automated devices. Both the route they travel and the operating speed are always under strict control. Thanks to this, the devices are safe not only for the loads themselves, but also for other warehouse workers.

Why is it worth using autonomous forklifts?

Using autonomous forklifts brings enormous benefits. This is not only the possibility of reducing expenses somewhat, but also solving the problem resulting from staff shortages. Autonomous forklifts, when properly programmed, are extremely useful and significantly speed up many warehouse operations, while simultaneously increasing their efficiency.
