Operating a forklift may seem quite difficult at first glance, however, it’s enough to familiarize yourself with a few simple rules, which will make it pleasant and simple, and most importantly, completely safe. At first glance, you can see that forklifts differ from each other, not only in terms of construction, but also general purpose. Their operation will also require different skills from the operator, which is why there is a division into categories of forklift operating licenses. Nevertheless, below we will try to focus on operating forklifts in the traditional version.
Forklift Operation – How to Prepare for It?
Forklift operation is intended exclusively for operators with state licenses. To obtain this type of license, it is necessary to:
- be at least 18 years old,
- have at least basic education,
- have no valid health contraindications that would prevent forklift operation.
After we obtain the appropriate documents, we can proceed to operate forklifts.
Forklift Operation Step by Step
Proper forklift operation should begin with familiarizing yourself with its operating manual. Although this may seem trivial, it contains all important issues and technical information related to the vehicle. Such a manual should also contain information about possible lifting capacity, which is necessary for proper operation of a given forklift.
The next step is a thorough check of the forklift’s technical condition. For this purpose, the operator should rely primarily on annotations contained in the forklift’s operating manual, as well as on self-conducted inspections. What needs to be checked?
- in electric forklifts – battery charge,
- in combustion forklifts – fuel level,
- proper functioning of horn and lights,
- operation of all levers and pedals,
- fluid levels (coolant, engine oil).
Before starting the vehicle, it’s worth ensuring proper seat adjustment and checking access to all necessary control elements, so that work is efficient and comfortable.
The last stage before starting the engine should absolutely be fastening the seatbelt by the person who will operate the device. To start the engine, it will be necessary to check that the battery does not have the safety switch in the OFF position. If not, we can proceed to insert the key into the ignition. After turning it to position 2, the control lights should come on in the forklift, and engine preheating will turn on. After they go out, you can set the key to position 3. After starting the engine, it is recommended to briefly press both accelerator pedals momentarily. After releasing them, all control lights (charging and lubrication) should go out. Then we can proceed to work without obstacles.
